Shangri La

The Tibetans for many years live on the range and were nomads. Here are some of the things     you can buy in the stores. Beautiful furs, yak tail whips (to keep the flies off of you when you
are riding your horse!) Those long beads that are hanging there are Tibetan prayer beads.      They pray them just like the Catholics pray the rosary.

Here is the market where you go everyday to buy your food. The meat that they eat here is          called Yow. A mix of yak and cow!  It is a bit more rangy and very lean.

The signs in China are so funny! This is my favorite sign in Shangri La so far!

This is Shangri La from the top of a mountain. We hiked way up and got some beautiful photos. The elevation here is about 14,000 ft. The building with the gold point is a "fake" monastery for tourists. Julie calls it the disco monastery because they light it up with neon lights at night! The real, and very famous, monastery is further left. It is called the San Ling Sung monastery and is second to the monastery in Lhasa. We are going tomorrow so I will include pictures of it next time. The mountains in the back are the Himalayas, and are the back side to the mountains I have seen from India on my trips there.

Here is a Tibetan grandma, who owns a little jewelry kiosk in old town. She is a member of                                                                         our big "family!"

Here is the Compass Cafe, and one of the Tibetan workers.

This is Shangri La old town. All of the buildings are made of wood, and it is full of shops and         restaurants. This is where the cafe is located that the Peck's work at.

Here are the Com Tibetan women in from the village for a day of shopping.
